TRAGEDY IN MALAWI: VICE PRESIDENT SAULOS CHILIMA AND NINE OTHERS PERISH IN HELICOPTER CRASH

We are deeply saddened to learn the demise of Malawi Vice President Saulos Chilima and nine other passengers in a helicopter crash on Monday, June 10. The aircraft was found in Chikangawa Forest after long hours of searching.

This sad news was confirmed in a press statement issued on Tuesday, June 11, by the secretary to the president and cabinet, Colleen Zamba.

The rescue operation began soon after the plane disappeared from radar, and Malawi President Lazarus Chakwera directed that all resources be poured into locating the aircraft.

“The aircraft, which was carrying the Vice President, the Right Honourable Dr. Saulos Klaus Chilima, and nine others, was found this morning in the Chikangawa forest. Unfortunately, all on board have perished in the crash,” the message stated in part.

The late Saulos Chilima, who was an economist, worked closely with the Malawian president H.E Lazarus Chakwera to Malawi push for a major economic transition in the nation by 2063, becoming an inclusive, affluent, and self-sufficient industrialized upper-middle-income country. Chilima recently was in Seoul, South Korea, at the Korea-Africa Business Summit where he participated in exchange of ideas and encouraged Korean business leaders to invest in Malawi.

As the Association of Evangelicals in Africa (AEA), we extend our message of condolence to the people of the great nation of Malawi. We stand with the Evangelical Association of Malawi during this hard time, and we pray that the Lord will greatly comfort the Malawian people.
