AEA prepares for a Major Relief Effort in Goma

Following the catastrophic escalation of conflict in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), in North Kivu particuularly in Goma, that led to thousands of deaths and millions of the displaced, the Association of Evangelicals in Africa (AEA) has mobilized for a major relief effort to support the affected communities. AEA has partnered with Barnabas Aid for over 13 million Kenya Shillings worth of relief Aid.

The prompt response of AEA in partnership with Barnabas Aid, saw Jim Olang, AEA’s Head of Programs and Communications alongside Melissa Mushamalirwa, Monitoring and Evaluation officer, travel to Goma just on time, to coordinate an upcoming distribution of medical hygiene, blankets and food items. During their visit, they met with key leaders from the Evangelical Alliance of Congo, including General Secretary – Bishop Israel Ngirababo, Development Officer Jephté Lumeto, and Youth Manager and Monitoring and Evaluation Officer Ibrahim Kasereka. The team also visited Open Springs orphanage to cement a partnership in serving children affected by the conflict in Eastern DRC.

This relief initiative, aims to provide essential support to communities severely impacted by the ongoing violence and brings together international partners and the local church in Goma.

The humanitarian situation in Goma has reached a critical point, with thousands of displaced families struggling to find shelter, food, and medical care. The need for immediate relief is urgent as communities grapple with the devastation caused by ongoing conflict. Children, women, and the elderly are among the most vulnerable, facing severe shortages of food, clean water, and basic healthcare. In this time of crisis, the support provided by AEA and Barnabas Aid is crucial in bringing hope and practical assistance to those suffering.

This is a defining moment for the church across Africa and Christians in diaspora to stand in solidarity with the people of the DRC. AEA still appeals for more partners to come on board to respond to the cries of our brothers and sisters who are facing unimaginable hardships.

We call upon churches, Christian organizations, and individuals across the continent and beyond, to unite in prayer, advocacy, and tangible support to help bring relief to the suffering Congolese people. Now is the time to be the eyes, ears, hands and feet of our Lord Jesus Christ to a nation that urgently need a full Christian response.
