A Tribute to a Pillar of Evangelical Leadership: Bishop João Muchongo
It is with profound sorrow and a deep sense of loss that we, the Association of Evangelicals in Africa (AEA), receive the heartbreaking news of the passing of Professor Dr. Bishop João Muchongo, Vice President of the Evangelical Association of Mozambique. Bishop Muchongo rested in the Lord yestermorning, leaving behind a legacy of faith, leadership, and unwavering commitment to the mission of the Gospel.
Professor Dr. Muchongo was a pillar of the evangelical community in Mozambique and beyond. His dedication to the work of God was evident in his tireless efforts to strengthen the church, equip leaders, and serve his nation with integrity and passion. Through his leadership within the Evangelical Association of Mozambique, he played a crucial role in advancing the Kingdom of God, fostering unity among believers, and advocating for the values of the Gospel in society.
His passing is a great loss not only to his family and the church in Mozambique but also to the broader evangelical community across Africa. We grieve deeply with our brothers and sisters in Christ who had the privilege of working alongside him and benefiting from his wisdom, guidance, and servant-hearted leadership.

As we mourn, we take comfort in the promise of God’s Word:
“Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of His saints.” – Psalm 116:15
In this time of sorrow, the Association of Evangelicals in Africa (AEA) stands in solidarity with the Evangelical Association of Mozambique, Dr. Muchongo’s family, and all those whose lives he touched. We extend our heartfelt condolences and prayers, asking the Lord to grant His peace that surpasses all understanding to everyone affected by this loss. May the Holy Spirit, our Comforter, strengthen his loved ones and fill their hearts with the hope of the resurrection.
Though Dr. Muchongo has departed from this earthly life, his legacy will continue to live on through the work he passionately pursued and the lives he impacted. We honour his memory and thank God for the gift of his life and ministry.
May his soul rest in eternal peace in the presence of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
In Christ’s Love,
Dr. Master O. Matlhaope
