Burundi Evangelical Alliance celebrates its 1st Anniversary

The Association of Evangelicals in Burundi (AEB) celebrated its 1st anniversary on the 30th of November, 2024 at King’s Conference Center in Bujumbura, Burundi.

AEB hosted the Vice Chair of International Council of the World Evangelical Alliance (WEA), Rev. Dr. Frank Hinkelmann, representatives from various organizations such as World Vision and World Relief, different heads of church denominations and members of the pastors’ network of Burundi.

To kickstart the anniversary celebration, Rev. Audace Baraduhama, the President of AEB, shared with the participants the 2025 Strategic Plan of the association. The General Secretary of AEB, Edmund Gakiza, presented the journey of the association from November 2023. In his speech, Gakiza mentioned the critical role that the Secretary General of the Association of Evangelicals in Africa (AEA) Dr. Master O. Matlhaope, played to ensure the establishment of AEB. He also commended Bruce Barron, the former Communications Director at WEA for playing a great role as well, that led to the formation of AEB. Mr. Edmund also invited all evangelical denominations in Burundi to join AEB.

In his speech sent through the office of AEA, Dr. Master Matlhaope extended his heartfelt congratulations to the Association of Evangelicals in Burundi (AEB) on this important milestone; the first anniversary of the association.

“This anniversary is a testimony to the vision and commitment of your leadership and the unity of your members. In just one year, AEB has become a shining example of what it means to stand as a light in the nation, fostering unity and making a positive impact in Burundi. AEA is proud to walk alongside you in this journey, encouraging and celebrating your faithfulness to God’s mission,” stated Dr. Matlhaope.

The AEA SG also thanked the government of Burundi for its efforts to create an environment where religious organizations can thrive. He further urged the government continue partnering with the church, recognizing that the shared goal of transformation is best achieved when the two institutions work together, and therefore policies that uphold religious freedoms and encourage collaboration are highly encouraged, as they will enable the church to maximize its contributions to the nation’s progress.

Rev. Dr. Frank Hinkelmann, who also addressed the congregants, congratulated AEB members for all that they have done in just one year. He reminded the participants that what Jesus prayed for in John 17:35, is that there should be unity among the body of Christ.

The celebration culminated in a joyous cake-cutting ceremony as the participants thanked the Lord for a gracious first year and prayed for God’s guidance moving forward as Burundian evangelicals seek to live and proclaim the Good News of Jesus amongst all nations and peoples, seeking holiness, justice, and transformation at every level: individual, family, community, and culture.
